UHCA does participate in the ACC Neighborhood Watch Program. These programs are designed to prevent crime in residential areas and are governed by the residents being vigilant for persons, vehicles or occurrences in their neighborhood that do not fit into the ordinary ebb and flow of the area.
Fortunately, UH is one of the safest neighborhoods in ACC! We rarely have crime here.
The main service the Neighborhood Watch is the Reverse 911 call. We have a master list of residents that we provide to the police. If there are any crimes in our neighborhood, you will receive a call from the ACC police alerting you to what type of crime, and the location. WE DO NOT SHARE THIS LIST WITH ANYONE ELSE except our community association board, and the police, so make sure to registered with us via our list-serv, or sent directly to Michelle Roche at m.roche@charter.net
Also, as part of the neighborhood watch, you can alert the police to when you will be on vacation or extended leave of absence. They will provide a daily drive-up service to check on your house. For this service, contact Katie Jones at (706) 613-3358 ext 230.
Other tips from the police:
ALWAYS CALL 911 AS SOON AS YOU SEE OR HEAR SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY. Make sure you can be as descriptive as possible to the vehicle, or persons of interest.
Citizens are reminded of the county ordinance regarding the requirement for both a visible permit and ID badge for anyone soliciting in Athens-Clarke County. Always ask for credentials. If someone does not have the permit and ID badge, call 911 immediately.
If you want the police to come to your house at night, make sure you tell the 911 operator if you do not want the search lights to be used on your home. If the officer needs to go into your backyard, tell the operator if you have a dog outside.
If you come home and there has been a break in, do not enter the home, and do not touch anything. Forensics will only be able to come out and dust for fingerprints if the crime scene has not been disturbed.
Keep doors, car doors, cabinets, storage units, crawl spaces and windows locked.
Consider adding a computer alarm system and/or outdoor lighting with motion detection.
Gather serial numbers from your computers, bikes, lawn equipment, AND your AC unit and put them in a safe place.
Contact Katie Jones to check out the electric pencil for engraving your valuables with a recognizable name or symbol. DO NOT use your social security number.
If your driver’s license still has your SS #, make sure to get that changed as soon as possible.
If you are worried about the safety of your house, you can contact Community Protection at 706-613-3790 to request a SEPTET opinion. An officer will come out and access your property for safety and environmental issues to determine what you can do to make your house less of a target.
